About REPhRAME

Recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTIs) impose a substantial clinical and socio-economic burden on patients and healthcare systems, particularly affecting women. Treatment still relies heavily on antibiotics, which contributes to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and may reduce or even hinder long-term therapeutic effectiveness.

The REPhRAME project addresses this urgent unmet need by investigating innovative, non-antibiotic strategies. The project evaluates a bacteriophage-based investigational medicinal product to treat acute infections and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT-IMP) to prevent recurrence by restoring a healthier microbiome.

Building on a seamless Phase Ib/IIa randomised controlled trial, REPhRAME will assess optimal routes of administration, clinical efficacy, reduction in antibiotic use and prevention of recurrent infections. Multi-omics analyses, biomarker discovery, and health economic modelling complement the clinical trial, while patient engagement, ethical oversight, and regulatory alignment ensure societal relevance and translational impact.

By combining precision medicine, novel biologics manufacturing, and robust clinical evidence, REPhRAME aims to pioneer sustainable alternatives to antibiotics in patients with rUTIs, improve patients’ quality of life and support goals of the European Union in AMR mitigation and healthcare innovation.
